Athens remains one of the most ideal touring destinations during winter and summer. The capital of Greece with approximate population of 5 million people, is one of the most beautiful European cities, as the sea embraces its perimeter from side to side and is sited between five big mountains. Mount Parnitha, where the city’s casino is situated is the tallest of all. Mount Penteli produced the marble which was used for building the temple of Parthenon, of the world famous Acropolis. Smallest mountain is Mount Hymettous and is the one we cross on our taxi route from the airport (sited 30 km outside Athens) to the city’s centre. During your stay in Athens, besides going to see the world’s famous Parthenon, you can visit the Acropolis museum, the second largest museum of Europe following Louvre, and spend some time shopping in the Ancient Market situated on the cliff’s foot. On the one city edge, you can find port Piraeus, one of the biggest Mediterranean ports, from where you can get the ship and travel to any Greek island, with most famous destinations consisting of Mykonos, Santorini known for the wonderful sunset and many others such as Cycladic, Dodekanese and Sporades islands which combine picturesque mountain and sea landscapes. On the south part of the city, the Athens Riviera is located consisting of a 50km route parallel to the majestic sea view. Having as a starting point the beach of Alimos (Sun Coast), the biggest summer beach bar club restaurant of Athens, Bolivar, can be found where one can enjoy swimming in the sea during morning time and go on with having a drink in the night while indulging in an unforgettable event as the club is constantly hosting the most famous world Djs. On the other side of the Riviera, the majestic temple of Neptune appears in Sounio where one can visit the archaeological space and enjoy a sunset equally beautiful to the one of Santorini island. On the way to Sounio, a visitor can meet many organised or free beaches, beautiful traditional restaurants serving fresh fish and Ouzo, as well as the Vouliagmenis lake. The lake consists an amazing natural wonder surrounded by large rocks located 50m from the sea, where the visitors can enjoy swimming in its organised beach.
Therefore, no matter what Greek destination you pick for your holidays, we highly recommend that you spend at least two or three days sightseeing in the city that never sleeps, Athens.
