Marathon
Marathon is a town of north western Athens as well as the seat of the homonymous municipality. At its end the largest artificial lake can be found which supplies Athens with its drinking water. It is now one of the most historical municipalities of Greece worldwide as it was the place where the legendary battle between Athenians and Persians took place in September 490 B.C.. Its name originated from its local hero Marathos. The cities of Provalinthus, Henoe and Trikorithus were later founded and together with Marathon concisted the ”Tetrapolis” of Attica. Marathon is also responsible for the terms Marathon- runner and Marathon run, the world’s famous 50 km race which thousands of athletes participate in every year.
